A fake policeman identified as Mahmuda Hamza, who was arrested by the Sokoto State Police Command for extorting money from people with a police identity card, has confessed to the crime.
The State command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Cordelia Nwaiwe, who paraded the suspect alongside some area boys at the police headquarters in the state on Friday, told newsmen that the Commissioner of Police in the state has declared war against area boys and other miscreants. The
Confessing to the crime, the fake policeman told Punch’s correspondent that he took the identity card from a deceased policeman, and attached his passport photograph to it.
“I am a fraudster and I know I have committed an offence but I am pleading, I will not go into crime again if I am pardoned. I am not an armed robber, but a fraudster. I have two wives and seven children and I feed them all from the money I make through this fraud,” he explained.
The PPRO who added that the suspect will be arraigned in court when investigations are concluded, also advised parents to talk to their wards to be law-abiding “as it is not going to be business as usual for criminals in the state.”
Recall that we reported few days ago that two fake policemen identified as Jumoke Mutairu, 45 and Johnson Uzoma, 29, were also arrested by the police in Lagos for alleged impersonation, extortion. The suspects were said to have committed the offence on June 20, at about 1:30pm, extorting residents of Itire and Mushin.
Clad in black tees and berets having police insignia, they were said to have moved from house to house demanding ‘security alert’ levy. The suspects, it was gathered, were allegedly trained by the founder, Chosen Ministry Church, Ijeshatedo, Chief Johnson Oni, said to be at large.
